 Key findings:

  • Two new studies reported that exercising in the evening is associated with reduced insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes patients (van der Velde, 2023) and weight loss and better oxygen utilisation in healthy adults (Brooker PG, 2023) compared to when exercising in the morning. 
  • When you eat carbohydrates, your body breaks them down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. In response to rising blood sugar levels, the pancreas releases a hormone called “insulin” to help transport glucose from the bloodstream into the cells, where it can be used for energy or stored for later use. If our body loses insulin sensitivity and develops insulin resistance, we cannot metabolize glucose properly, leading to type 2 diabetes.
  • The evening was defined differently in two studies, one defined as 6 PM to midnight, and the other study defined as 4 PM to 7 PM. The first study compared exercising in the afternoon (noon to 6 PM) with the evening (6 PM to midnight), and exercising in the evening was more effective in reducing insulin resistance than exercising in the afternoon.
