- Our genetics do not change over a lifespan; but our epigenetics are modified by your lifestyle and other environment factors.
- The most studied epigenetic phenomenon is called “DNA methylation”. It works like a switch to turn on and off the gene expression. Even if two individuals have the same genotype, depending on their epigenetic profile, the gene can express differentially.
- Scientists invented the “epigenetic clocks” to measure one’s biological age using the DNA methylation phenomenon. These “clocks” can measure how biologically old you are, as opposed to your chronological age (“how many years you have lived”).
- A recent study by Chen Z et al found that certain genetic drivers, such as being overweight, are significantly associated with aging; thus, weight control is very important in delaying biological aging.
